The Goldens love to have their teeth brushed, actually I think it's the toothpaste that they love and they just tolerate the toothbrush!
Like all products I use on the dogs, I always go the natural way whenever possible. Today, we are going to share a super easy homemade toothpaste with ingredients you probably already have on hand.
Ingredients:
1/4 tsp Salt | 1/2 tsp. dried Parsley | 1/4 tsp. Turmeric | 2 tbl. Baking Soda | 1/4 cup unrefined, virgin organic coconut oil | 1 tbl. beef broth
Just mix all the ingredients together, you may have to let the coconut oil soften a little first.
Put into an airtight container and let it set up. You can store it in the refrigerator after using.
Now it's time to get down to business!
As I said before, I think Bruin would much rather just eat the toothpaste than have it clean his teeth and gums.
I started brushing their teeth as soon as we brought them home as puppies, even it was just with a soft cloth. It helped get them get use to me fiddling in their mouths and checking out their pearly whites!
Never use human toothpaste on your dogs, it contains fluoride which is poisonous for them. There are some great dog toothpastes on the market but I like knowing exactly what's in the products that I use on the dogs and making my own let's me do just that.
Benefits of Homemade Dog Toothpaste
Parsley - Parsley is known to be an anti-inflammatory and helps with bad breath.
Turmeric - Turmeric is a natural way to whiten teeth and prevent plaque build up. It's also antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory.
Coconut Oil - Coconut oil is a great healthy fat that also eliminates bad breath. It's antibacterial, anti fungal and antiseptic.
Salt & Baking Soda - These are gentle abrasives to help clean the teeth
Beef Broth - This is just for flavor. If your dog thinks it smells and tastes good chances are they'll let you brush their teeth!
There are so many variations you can make when it comes to this toothpaste. You can substitute the beef for chicken broth. If your dog isn't a fan of turmeric, try a pinch of cinnamon.
Does your dog like their teeth brushed? Would you ever make them homemade toothpaste?

Were you able to find a beef broth that didn't contain onions? I've checked all of the brands at my store and I'm left making my own broth at home. What brand did you buy?
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by! Yes, I make my own broths in the crockpot. Any leftovers I pour into ice cube trays, it makes the perfect portion size. I will have to check my stores for the beef broth!
