Rainy Day Activities for your Senior Dog

The joy of being a dog has no age limit. Whether they are 4 or 10 years old - they love to play, it's just up to us to decide what type of play is best suited for their individual needs.

This summer we have had our fair share of rainy days and although Miley, our 10 yr old senior Golden loves to be out in the rain, we've had to come up with some fun ways to keep her happy indoors. Today I thought I would share how we keep her active and engaged both physically and mentally on those rainy days.

Muffin Tin Game

Take a muffin tin and hide some treats under a few tennis balls and let the fun begin! When I first did this, I thought for sure Miley would just take a ball and run but she actually enjoyed sniffing out the treats and left the balls alone.

Tug-of-War

A game of tug of war will depend on your dogs physical and activity level. Miley acts like a puppy when she sees a tug toy so she is all in with this old school game.

Dog Puzzles

We were introduced to dog puzzles a few years ago, they are a great interactive tool for any dog of any age. Just hide some treats in the puzzle and watch your pup entertain themselves. This is one of Miley's favorites!

Meal Time Fun

We like to keep meal time for Miley fun as well. For the past few months we have been feeding her Chicken Soup for the Soul grain-free dog food and she LOVES it! She has never been the kind of dog that wakes you up in the morning and can't wait to eat, but she enjoys this food and is doing so well on it. These three have certainly been through their bouts of ear infections and tummy troubles over the years. It wasn't until we started to take a closer look at their diets that we finally conquered them both.

We have been treating Miley and Maggie's ear infections since they were little pups and being new dog owners we really didn't understand how their diet effected their health. Healthy Eating is a Family Affair with the Dogs

Maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle is my goal as a mom of two girls and three Golden Retrievers. Setting up healthy eating habits early is key and the best way to do this is by example and that is something I strive to do every day.

Now that my girls are older it's so important for them to be involved in taking care of the dogs and this includes what we give them for treats and meals. We include our dogs into everything we do as a family and that also involves mealtime.

Besides exercise and mental health, diet is the biggest contributor to their wellbeing. Teaching the girls which whole foods are safe for dogs is a great way for them to bond. When the girls reach for some carrots as a snack, they know that the dogs can enjoy these as well. Same goes for blueberries and bananas, which are just a few of their favorites. As a result of knowing which foods the dogs can eat they also know which foods are toxic and are just not healthy for them, this knowledge alone has helped the dogs maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Another way I have taught the girls about healthy choices for the dogs is mealtime. Learning what type of food we give the dogs and why has given them a good understanding of how important it is that we know what exactly is in their food.

5 Tips to Keep Your Golden Retriever Groomed Between Appointments

It's no secret that Golden Retriever's require a lot of grooming and upkeep. Depending on what kind of Golden you own, their coat and how active they are will determine how often you should schedule a grooming appointment, usually this falls between 6-8 weeks for a complete head to tail groom.

Over the years I have developed a few tips on how to keep my Goldens looking their best between grooming appointments. Whether you are trying to stretch out their appointments, like to have them look their best for the holidays or your Golden just doesn't do well at the groomers, these basic grooming tips will help to keep them looking clean and trimmed.

Brush & Clean the Coat with Waterless Shampoo

Before I begin, I brush the entire coat making sure to get out any tangles or knots which are usually behind the ears, the hindquarters and tail. Next, I like to use Isle of Dogs™ Refreshing Waterless Shampoo to clean their coat. This is a great option if you can't give them a bath or if you have an older Golden that doesn't enjoy bathing. It's sulfate and paraben free so it's gentle enough to use often without having to be rinsed out.

Just pump a good amount into the palm of your hand (it smells amazing!) and rub into their coat. I like to pay special attention to their chest, for some reason this is the first spot that starts to show dirt and grime. After I've gone through the entire coat I let it air dry for a bit.

Trim the Paws and Pads

If there is one thing that drives be bananas on my Goldens is "grinch feet", the long hair that grows between their toes that takes on a life of it's own. I use Top Performance Ball-Point Shears to trim the hair after brushing it backward. I like these scissors because they have a ball point so the tip isn't sharp, just keep brushing the hair back until it is completely even and smooth.

This will take some practice especially if your Golden isn't thrilled about having it's paws touched but after you're done they should look like this...

I like to use the Oster Pro Trimmer to trim the fur on their pads. You can use the scissors I used for the foot fur but I like the trimmer because it gets close to their pads without having to worry about cutting them - better to be safe than sorry!

Clean Up the Feathers

Bruin doesn't have thick feathers on his front legs, so it's easy to keep these looking good. I use the Top Performance Fine-Point Shears to just clean up the edges to make them look a little more tidy.

Trim the Nails

I swear my Golden's nails grow like weeds. As soon as I hearing them clicking on the floor, I know it's time for a trim. I find it much easier using a dremel tool rather than nail clippers. With the clippers you really have to be careful to not cut the quick which will bleed. I like to use the Dremel Pet Nail Grooming Toolas an alternative, it's a quick way to shorten the nail with a smooth finish.

The cordless dremel tool has a few speeds, so start on low until your dog is used to it. Just make sure any fur is away from the dremel and never apply pressure or leave the sander touching the nail for longer than a second.

Apply Conditioning Spray

After you have finished trimming, your Golden's fur should be dry and smell amazing! The final thing I do is spray Isle of Dogs Conditioning Spray throughout the coat with a final good brushing.

This conditioning spray is a primrose oil rich spray combined with herbal extracts to soothe skin, alleviate flakes and freshen and add shine to dull coats which helps extend time between baths. Since I don't trim Bruin's hind leg feathers or his tail, this spray keeps those areas looking healthy, shiny and soft!

The Results

Here is Bruin after our grooming session. He looks pretty darn good for not having a full bath, he smells great and feels so soft! The one thing I didn't touch on today is the ears. As you can see, Bruin has crazy ear hair and I am just not brave enough to touch them so that is the one thing I leave for the professionals.

As you can see with just a few simple steps, you can keep your Golden looking their best between their grooming appointments. You don't need to do it all in one day, if you are just starting out start with the Isle of Dog's Waterless Shampoo and Conditioning Spray followed by daily brushing and you will notice a big difference. Then you can try trimming the feathers, paws and nails!

Can you believe Halloween is less than two weeks away? Do you dress up your dog for Halloween? We are always last minute here with the Goldens but somehow seem to pull it off just in time.

One thing we never leave for last minute is the treats! A few months ago I came across a Day of the Dead silicone mold and I knew it would make a fun and healthy Halloween dog treat.

I love making these homemade frozen treats for the Goldens almost as much as they love eating them. It's an easy and quick way to get wholesome ingredients into your dog's diet because you know exactly what is in them.

There are so many combinations of flavors you can use when it comes to these silicone molds. Today, I decided to kick in up a bit and create three layers of the Goldens favorite food combos!

Triple Layer Day of the Dead Dog Treats

Before we get started, keep in mind that each of these layers will need to set up individually in the freezer. From start to finish these took me approximately 1 1/2 hours to make before the pups got their first taste.

Organic Ingredients:

Plain Greek Yogurt, Coconut Oil, Pure Pumpkin, Cinnamon, Banana, Honey

Step 1 - Combine 1/2 cup plain greek yogurt with a tablespoon of coconut oil and spoon into the mold and place in freezer for 30 minutes or until firm.

Step 2 - Stir 1/2 cup canned pure pumpkin and 1/4 tsp. cinnamon and spoon on top of the frozen yogurt layer. Place back in freezer for another 30 minutes or until firm.

Step 3 - Blend one mashed banana with 1 tbl. honey and spoon on top of pumpkin layer. Place back in freezer for 30 minutes or until firm.

Once all the layers are completely firm - time to pop them out!

Aren't they cool?!

They are like candy corn for dogs but so much cuter and healthier!

Miley has been a counter-surfer since she was a pup stealing a baked potato off the counter so I knew she would be the first one to pop up for a taste.

What layer do you think your dog would like best? I'm pretty sure Miley's favorite would be the yogurt, Maggie's would be the banana and Bruin's would be the pumpkin.

5 Healthy Fall Foods to Enjoy With Your Dog

October is here and Fall is upon us. There are so many things I look forward to during the Fall months, from the cool crisp air and warm sunshine, to the beautiful colors of the autumn foliage, hiking with the dogs and especially tasty Fall treats.

There are some great Fall foods that you can share with your dog as long as they are prepared right and given in small amounts as a treat. Here are a few of the Goldens favorite healthy Fall foods from our kitchen.

1. Apples

I have never met an apple I didn't like and I'm pretty sure the Goldens haven't either! Apples contain fiber, calcium and Vitamin C. They make a tasty treat in small amounts - just be sure to keep them from eating the core and seeds as they are poisonous.

2. Pumpkin

Pumpkin is like the superfood for dogs and it's safe to say we always have multiple cans of pure pumpkin on hand. High in beta carotene and Vitamin C, just a small amount of pumpkin can soothe an upset stomach, help with diarrhea and constipation.

3. Sweet Potato

Sweet Potato is a good source of dietary fiber and Vitamin A. A small amount, thoroughly cooked makes a healthy treat for dogs. Baked sweet potato fries is a regular at our house so I always leave the seasoning off a few fries for a tasty treat for the Goldens.

4. Green Beans

Green beans are a nice source of fiber, magnesium and Vitamin A&C. They make a perfect treat because they can be eaten raw or cooked, they are low in calories and very filing. So if your dog is a little over weight, try swapping a cookie for a green bean!

5. Butternut Squash

Butternut squash offers a lot of nutritional value including fiber and potassium. It helps with tummy troubles just make sure to cook it thoroughly. I like to puree it and put a spoonful in the Golden's bowls.

Although each of the foods mentioned above are safe for dogs, anything in excess can cause temporary digestive upset. Any new foods introduced into your dog's diet should be give in small amounts as a treat. As always, be sure to check with your Vet if you're concerned about food sensitivities in your dog.

The first week of October is National Walk Your Dog Week so we thought this would be a great opportunity to discuss the benefits of walking your dog and hopefully encourage everyone to hit the pavement with their dog.

Taking your dog for a walk shouldn't be regarded as a chore, there are many benefits not only for your dog but for you as well. October is one of our favorite times of year to walk. The weather is finally cooling off from the summer and the Fall foliage is beautiful!

1. Burn off Energy - Dogs tend to get bored during the day and we all know a bored dog gets into mischief. Going for regular walks will help them burn off their energy in a healthy and non-destructive way.

4. Weight Management - Walking is a great way to keep your dog's weight in check. Whether your dog needs to lose a few pounds or maintain their weight, walking can help with both.

Miley and Maggie are super hero's when it comes to going on walks, they enjoy every aspect of it. Bruin is a work in process, he tends to have anxiety when on a leash but it is something we are working on with him.

Golden Retrievers are prone to be overweight especially as they age so it's so important for me to get the Goldens leashed up and walking on a regular schedule.

I think one of the things all dog owners have in common is how much we wish to give our dogs a happy and healthy life. When it comes to their health and nutrition there are three ways in which I try and do this every day through their food and treats, supplements and dental chews.

When choosing treats for the Goldens, the ingredients list is the first thing I look at. How long is the list and can I pronounce the ingredients are two things I consider when deciding to purchase something or not.

When Miley was younger she was prone to ear infections, so we changed her diet and really paid attention to what was in her food and treats and since then her ear infections have disappeared. One of the things I love most about being a dog mom to three Goldens is rewarding them. 8 Essentials For Fido's Trip to the Park + Giveaway

As much as I hate to see summer end I am looking forward to cooler temps. New England Fall weather is beautiful, you can still enjoy the warm sunshine but with the cool, crisp air and most importantly the foliage is breathtaking.

One of our favorite things to do with the Goldens is taking trips to our favorite dog-friendly parks. They love exploring fun trails and different scents while we enjoy just being outside in nature with them.

Today we thought we would share a list of essentials items we always take along with us to the park. With the hurricanes that have devastated Texas, Florida and beyond the past few weeks we all know how important it is to be pet-prepared when disaster strikes. The same goes for when you are headed out to your local dog-friendly park, it's better to be prepared and safe than sorry.

8 Essentials For Fido's Trip to the Park

1. Collar/ID Tags
The Goldens almost always have their collars on with their up-to-date tags attached. That along with being microchipped is a safe practice in the event that your dog gets away from you and lost.

2. Leash
Seems like common sense but if you only knew how many times we've hit the road and realized we forgot the leashes. lol Even if you are going to an off-leash park, it's always best to have one in case you need it. The Goldens are always leashed, the chipmunk temptation is just too much for them to handle.

3. Insect Repellent
The first thing I do when we get to the park is wipe the Goldens down with Flea + Tick wipes. Although we treat them monthly, I like to have a little extra protection. A few years ago we tried Pet Naturals of Vermont brand and we have been using them ever since.

4. Camera/Phone
Yes, we always have our phone with us to take pics but I still like to use my dslr camera. There is nothing better than taking photos of your dog with nature as your backdrop.

5. Treats/Water
After all that exploring and posing for photos, we always make sure to stop for a water break. If we are going to be out for an extended period of time I will bring along some treats as well.

6. Poop Bags
You know what happens after they have had their snack. Be prepared for when nature calls to scoop their poop!

7. Brush/Comb
Once we head back to the car I like to quickly run a brush through the Goldens coat to remove any leaves, twigs or heavens forbid - ticks!

8. Cargo Liner
If your dog is anything like ours, they like to get dirty while exploring. They will step in any puddle they can find, attempt to go in the water if there is any and they are famous for digging holes! The last thing I want to do after leaving the park is clean the car, this is where a cargo liner comes in handy!

Pumpkin Spice Dog Treats

It's been a while since we posted a homemade dog treat recipe so we thought with the first day of Fall coming up next week, it's the perfect time to make a healthy Fall-inspired treat. We decided to jump on the pumpkin bandwagon and whip up a quick and easy Pumpkin Spice dog treat.

When I said quick and easy I wasn't joking, these treats have only 3 ingredients - pumpkin, greek yogurt and cinnamon. I believe it's so important to know what exactly is in my dog's treats and one way of doing that is by making them at home.

Before we get started, let's talk about the benefits of these three ingredients.

Pumpkin - Low in calories, canned pure pumpkin is a great source of fiber which helps with digestion and stomach issues. Just a small amount can help with diarrhea or constipation.

Greek Yogurt - Plain greek yogurt is high in calcium and protein. It also has probiotics that boost immunity and also help with digestion.

Cinnamon - Just a small amount of cinnamon a day can help regulate blood sugar, it has anti-inflammatory properties and also has the ability to slow or stop bacteria growth.

Pumpkin Spice Dog Treats

One of the nice things about these treats is that there are no set measurements. Depending on how much I have on hand, I usually do 2 parts greek yogurt to 1 part canned pure pumpkin and 1/2 tsp. cinnamon.

You can simply place the ingredients in a bowl and mix until combined or throw them in your blender and give it a whirl.

I'm pretty sure the Goldens would have enjoyed it right out of the blender as a smoothie but I think the pumpkins are fun and festive!

Just spoon the mixture into your favorite silicone mold or ice cube tray and place in the freezer until frozen. Scroll down to purchase the pumpkin mold pictured below.

I don't know who couldn't wait for these to set up more, me or the dogs. Aren't they just adorable?!

Miley couldn't wait to get her chompers into her pumpkin treat!

This recipe made 14 little pumpkins, something tells me I should have made more!

I think for the next batch I will add in some peanut butter or bananas - that'll really get them drooling!

How a Dog Gets Ready for Fashion Week #ChewyInfluencer

Rumor has it that Chewy Fashion Week is coming up at the end of the month and since Bruin just turned 4 yesterday, we thought this would be a great time to update his wardrobe!

Lets face it, boys have it much easier when it comes to fashion. Run a comb through your hair, throw on your favorite bow tie, add an accessory to top it all off and voila they're ready to hit the red carpet!

Dress Me Up!

We decided to take it old school and put Bruin in a signature satin black and white bow tie with a black Fedora finished with a white hat band around the crown.

Now that we have the fashion on point let's work on the pawitude. Bruin needs to work on it a bit before he hits the red carpet. We may be a bit biased in saying that he always looks adorable in front of the camera but what about changing it up a bit?!

Perhaps with a pout, you don't always have to show those pearly whites...

One of our favorites is the Smize. Yes, we think Bruin has this one down pat!

Now that we have the fashion and red carpet perfected there is one last thing we can't forget, a pre-red carpet snack.
