We also received many questions about dropping .blogspot from our domain name...
How did we do it, was it easy?
After hours and hours of searching the web and endless youtube videos on how to do it, we came across the perfect blog post from Somewhat Simple with a very easy to follow, step-by-step process with a screen-shot each step of the way.
After we purchased our domain name from GoDaddy (you can use whomever you want) the process was super simple and we were done in less than an hour with all of our old links being redirected to our new domain. All that was left to do was change our links for our social media pages and groups that we belong to.
What are the benefits?
It's shorter, easier to remember and it just looks a whole lot simpler!
Are there any disadvantages?
We haven't run into any problems but you may lose your Alexa and Page rank.
Hope this was helpful!
We are joining the Thursday Barks and Bytes Blog Hop hosted by Heart Like A Dog and 2 Brown Dawgs.
I did notice the new name when I stopped by last time but I thought I had it wrong...lol. I like the new name very much and am glad switching over was so easy. When I started out, I did the same thing and I remember it was not all that hard but I wish I had had a nice post to guide me because I ran into a couple small snags. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for joining the hop!
Sadly...you probably WILL lose your Alexa and Page rank. My cat's blog is on blogger and in 2013 I purchased a new link through Godaddy. I went from a page ranking of FIVE (which is fabulous).......down to ZERO. I STILL have no page ranking and will have the link 2 years this fall. Hopefully the same won't happen with you, it did with me and all of that building for years prior to purchasing the link was shot to hell.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, that's a big fall! I knew it was going to take a hit so I didn't want to keep putting it off like I had been. Wish I had done this from the beginning!
DeleteThis is on my "to do" list too...I have the domain name...but have been procrastinating....time to get moving!
ReplyDeleteI don't bother with that page ranking stuff. :-) BUT I did lose all my subscribers when I went to self-hosted from the free wordpress, but I also completely changed the name of my blog and the URL, (Mostly because my name was already taken.) :-)
ReplyDeleteGlad it went well for you and thank you so much for joining the blog hop!
Food for thought. Have a tremendous Thursday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
Thank you for posting this! I've been thinking about dropping the .blogspot from my blog, too!
ReplyDeleteDONE!! Thank you! I bought a domain name a while ago but hadn't taken the time to figure out how to set it up like this. :-)
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGosh this is all too complicated for me, I've only just managed to get Mum to start blogging, getting her to change it now might just fry her brain!

Hey there fur friends.
ReplyDeleteIs there a way we your followers can help
get your page ranking back.
Not sure if that makes any sense but wanted to ask.

Congrats on the new name and switch! I had heard it could be miserable to switch to self-hosted so I did it from the start. Glad to know it isn't as daunting as I thought!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the name change and dropping the blogspot! I dropped it last year. I'd put it off for ages, and you're right - it was easeir than I thought it would be. Only issue I had was that something went wonky and folks couldn't get to my site if they typed it in without the www. Wasted a bunch of time trying to fix it myself. Finally broke down and called GoDaddy and they helped me fix it in nuthin' flat. (It was something weird that I never could have fixed on my own!)
ReplyDeletethanks for this post, I hope it encourages my momma to chase the wp behind my name away too :o)

When I started my blog, I read the advice to just start off self hosted. I'm glad I did, but it was a lot of work at the time! It really helps to find the right information, that spells things out and makes it simple. Glad it worked out for you!
ReplyDeleteYay! We got our own domain name a few years back - makes it much easier!
